Elias Beriatos is Emeritus Professor of Spatial and Environmental Planning and Geography, University of Thessaly (Department of Urban-Spatial Planning and Regional Development). Doctor in Geography and Planning of the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne, DEA in Urban and Regional Planning (Universities of Paris IV and Paris X), Diploma in Human Geography of the University of Paris X- Nanterre and Diploma in Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens.
He has taught as visiting professor at the Renmin University of Beijing, in the ‘Dipartimento di Architettura e Planificazione Territoriale at the University of Βologna and the Institute of Geography of the Rumanian Academy of Sciences. He has given a number of lectures in universities and research centers worldwide. He has been Vice President of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), Vice President of the European Council of Town Planners (ECTP), President of the Greek Planners’ Association. He has also been Secretary General at the Ministry of Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works, Chairman of the National Committee HABITAT, Secretary General for Forest and Natural Environment. He has worked as an expert of the Commission of the European Union in DG Environment on Urban Environment and in DG Regio, on Interregional Co-operation (Exchange of Experience and know- how).
He is “WWF Leader for a Living Planet” Fellow in the Wessex Institute of Technology- UK, Awarded with the “Prize for the Best Published Scientific Paper by the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) and by The Council of Europe (CEMAT) for his contribution to the management of natural and cultural heritage and landscape of the European Continent.
